Relocation and Renovation of the Historic Hubbard Cabin

One of the oldest remaining structures at the Snowbowl, the historic log cabin has stood across the parking lot for years in a visibly deteriorating state. This project will relocate and restore the original ski lodge—preserving an important piece of Snowbowl history while giving it renewed purpose.

Known as the Hubbard Cabin, it is possibly the oldest surviving ski lodge in the United States. Constructed in 1938 by members of the Middlebury Winter Sports Club—including local Addison County residents and Middlebury College faculty and staff—the cabin reflects a deep tradition of community collaboration.

When ski trails were cut on Worth Mountain, spruce trees from the area were harvested for the cabin’s logs by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) alongside local residents. Instrumental in this effort was Middlebury resident Richard Hubbard ’36, a member of the Middlebury College Ski Team who later served as the full-time coach for both the men’s and women’s alpine teams.

The cabin served as the Snowbowl’s base lodge until 1962, and its history has touched generations within the community. Restoring the Hubbard Cabin is more than preservation—it’s an opportunity to reconnect with that legacy.

Starr Lodge Renovations and Guest Experience Enhancements

The Starr lodge at Middlebury Snowbowl is the heart of the guest experience. As we look ahead, we are focused on making the most of the space we already have—improving flow, comfort, and functionality for skiers, riders, families, and community members.

With the Hubbard Cabin becoming a dedicated home for the Middlebury Alpine Team, valuable space inside the main lodge can be reimagined for public use. That shift creates an important opportunity to better serve our guests without losing the character that makes the Snowbowl feel special.

Planned improvements include a new Snowbowl shop, improved social and gathering space, and a refreshed bar area that gives guests a better place to relax before, between, and after runs.

These renovations are about doing as much as we can with the footprint we have—creating a more welcoming, efficient, and enjoyable lodge experience while strengthening the Snowbowl for the future.
